5 Unique Marketing Ideas

There are a lot of marketing ideas out there for the small business owner to try. Sometimes we get

stuck in a rut and do the same thing over and over again hoping that it will lead to a different outcome. Insane, right!

So, I wanted to share a couple of different ways for you to market your business that maybe you hadn’t thought of before. Some might take more work then others. But pick one and try it out this week.

You could sponsor an Adopt-a-Highway area in your community to keep roads litter-free. They put up signs on who is doing the pick up and it would be a great way to get your business name out there. You would want to make sure to do the pick up so your part of the road looked good.

Create an annual award and publicize it. Those of you who have been involved in the UBC before know that there are little awards that are passed out here amongst the participants. Do the same thing with your business. You could give the award to your best customer and then create a press release from it.

Cold call businesses in your market. It doesn’t sound fun I know. But if you have a unique business niche then have a list of people who are interested in that unique niche it might be worth you time.

Create a unique lapel pin based on the products you sell to wear at meetings. You can do this with any type of clothing as well.

Conduct a random act of kindness. Pay the toll for the car behind yours and ask the toll collector to give your business card to them, telling them you paid their toll. Sure this is a crapshot, but it’s imaginative and you never know who might be on the road. It’s a low cost guerilla marketing tactic that has imagination written all over it.

So there you are 5 different ways to do some marketing that you might not have thought of. Leave a comment on my blog telling me which one you are going try.

My fav is the random act of kindness because I believe in the principles of giving. Not that I always follow.. But there are a lot of benefits to thinking about customers/clients first and what you can give away.

I think acts of kindness is a win/win. You win when the act of kindness is given and perhaps you may win again with the result of helping a person with their business.

I’m going to try your suggestion to cold call- I’ve been avoiding it but I want to be bold this year and give it a go!

Congratulations Nancy, that is never a favorite. But here are a couple of tips I learned. Expect to be hung up on, don’t take it personal. Be kind and listen as well as talk. That forms the bond that we try for before you go for the sale. Good luck. I’d love to hear your results.

  3. I like that fifth one a lot! I think it is zany enough to get folks who get the free toll (coffee, pop, or doughnut) to talk about it.
(I changed it from a toll to the others, since so many of us whiz through the booths without stopping, with our “EZPass” or similars.)

  4. I like the random act of kindness idea too. I’ve been thinking about this recently, but actually turning it into a marketing idea is really quite brilliant.

    Hi Shawn,
Pretty sure there’s a standout favourite amongst your commentors and I’d have to agree. I’ve always thought of buying the coffee of the person behind you, the only challenge being which type to choose.
Best wishes for UBC and 2013!

Hi Caylie, it seems we all have the thought of participating in the random act of kindness. Now all we have to do is figure out the best way to make it happen.

  6. Bandit signs seem popular around here and I’ve heard get great results for the right businesses as well.
