Yesterday I was at a new event for me and as I was introducing myself and telling people I was a virtual assistant I had several blank looks come my way. And it dawned on me that there are still people out there that have never heard of a virtual assistant and even if they have heard of a virtual assistant they don’t really understand what one does.

I have a great definition of what a VA is on my website.

What is a VA?

A Virtual Assistant (VA) is a highly-trained independent entrepreneur who provides a
myriad of business support services virtually via phone, fax and internet based
technology to support and meet the growing needs of businesses worldwide.
Partnering with a VA reduces stress, protects cash flow, eliminates administrative
hassles, and enables business people to find the success they originally set out to
achieve.

A VA is your right hand person helping you to succeed in your business. The irony is
you may never meet your VA as odds are they live nowhere near you!

In short I usually try to explain what I do as a 21st century secretary. (I know there will be many VA’s who don’t like me using the word secretary. But I’m trying to explain an abstract idea into a solid term.) I can see the light bulb turning on as the idea solidifies and then the most popular question asked is, do I answer phones?

My first thought, is that the most pressing business need they have or is that what the word secretary brings to their mind? Whatever the case I usually use their question as an opening for further discussion.

I hope that if you didn’t understand what a virtual assistant was before that the definition helped you. Share with me below what is the one big thing you need help with in your business.

  1. Often, the best way to explain a concept people aren’t familiar with is to illustrate. Testimonials are a great way to do this (offer to write them for someone to sign off on if there’s a particular aspect of your business you’ve done well for them that you want to spotlight). I know a lot of VAs that have had a difficult time expressing what they do. Part of the challenge is the range of services is considerable and not everyone does the same things. If you can tell a story of what you did to help a client in terms another can relate to (Sue had a growing business but was losing clients because she didn’t have a database set up, failed to follow through by deadlines, etc. . . . ). Sometimes just getting someone to nod and say ‘that’s me’ is a better selling tool than definitions.

I know the feeling Shawn, when I first started out in the UK and I said I was a virtual assistant, blank looks everywhere! Now I tend to do all my networking online so many of the people I network with know what I am. :)

Online people do get it better then face to face conversations. My coach is making me go out networking so I’m running into this more often.

Your article is helpful. I have always questioned if a person worked with one VA or if they needed more that one because each one specialized in just one or two things. I do a little outsourcing but I’m sure the need to outsource in increase as my site develops. I like the idea of having a “right hand person” helping me reach my goals. :)

Great way to look at it Chef William. That your VA is your right hand and can free you up to work on things that only you can do.
