This marketing tip is about meetup groups. I don’t know if you are familiar with meetup.com? “Meetup is the world’s largest network of local groups. Meetup makes it easy for anyone to organize a local group or find one of the thousands already meeting up face-to-face. More than 9,000 groups get together in local communities each day, each one with the goal of improving themselves or their communities.” In other words it’s a great opportunity for a person who sits behind a computer day in and day out for their work to get up go out and meet people in their community.
I am involved in several different meetup groups and here are a couple of things that I have learned. Meetup groups with the same people week after week are not a good group for me. I need an active, flowing group. Your intent should be there to form relationships it will take about month of getting to know people before they will want to do business with you. When somebody approaches you to do a one –on-one, this is not a license to do a full sales presentation this is an invitation to get to know you and you to know them. Think of it as a first date.
Even if you never do business with someone in a meetup group that you go to. They will get to know you and be willing to pass your information on to a friend or colleague that may need your services.
Do you belong to any meetup groups? What has been your experience?
