Gaining Followers on Social Media

social-media-bandwagonI think it is safe to say most people, especially business people, are on some of the social media platforms. Those of us who are there for especially business put a lot of work and time into our social media work. We write status updates, we schedule them and follow up with any comments that people make to your updates. Have you ever gotten so busy with the doing that you forgot the reason for why we are involved with all this work and wonder if it really is worth it? Let’s visit some of the reasons that business people should be involved with social media.

All business people need contacts, relationships with other people. No contacts no business opportunities and pretty soon no business. One of the biggest reasons to be on social media is to form those relationships with people. That is one of the most beautiful things about social media in my opinion is that you get to meet people from all over the world and form relationships with them. They in turn get to know, like and trust you. And of course, it becomes easy to do business with people who you form a bond with. That is the secret behind social media.

Social media gives you the opportunity to create a situation where you can invite them over to your newsletter, a free offer or other ethical bribe to gain their name and email. The reason this is so important is because you now have their information on your list so even if something where to happen to the social media platform that you had your relationship with that person on. You still have a way to contact them and share great information with them and also any other correspondence that you wish.

Social media also presents the opportunity for social proof to be shown that others like you and do business with you. Make sure to have the social media buttons on your blog so people can share your articles with their friends. That is the online way of doing word of mouth advertising. If one of their friends sees that they like you, there is a chance that they will check you out and maybe do business with you.

So the next time you get tired and discouraged with doing your social media work. Remember, it is more than just a bunch of words and updates. It is one of the best tools a business person has to get to be known. That you can create a list of people to do business with no matter what might happen with social media. And the power of social proof and how it can bring you additional customers.

Shawn, I agree, social media is the best for engaging your potential client and the know, like and trust factor. Thank you for the reminder to carry on and not get discouraged and give up.

  2. Thanks for this Shawn

Sometimes I find it all a little overwhelming and I need to start getting on the hootsuite band wagon a bit more to help me get more organised with it. Great post!

  3. Sometimes I also find social media a bit overwhelming too and have scaled back quite a lot of Facebook and Twitter, and am only registered to two online forums.

What I have realised is that for me, it’s best to have meaningful interaction with fewer people, rather than trying to target the masses and not really engaging anyone effectively.

  4. Agree with all the other comments Shawn that social media can be one of the most time consuming, tedious, fun, overwhelming jobs to tackle but it really is the best way to get your name out there.

When it starts to get too much for me, I usually drop off for a day or three, but because I have built relationships and consistency in my posting up to that point, I have people looking for me when I am gone, I still get engagement and followers and it feels wonderful :)
