Put on a Happy Face

What does a happy face have to do with small business and virtual assistants? Both spend a lot of time on the telephone. Let me ask you when was the last time you talked to somebody who had a monotone and it seemed like talking was a chore for them? Did you want to call that person back, do business with them? Most of us would prefer to find someone a little more upbeat. It is hard to imagine a person who has a downtrodden attitude on the phone as being someone who can get excited about a project you might need help with or for them to be passionate enough to see work finished and completed at the end.

A smile brings happiness

There have been studies done that prove your smile can radiate over the phone. Your voice sounds upbeat and happy. A smile can change your attitude and help you to realize how important it is to be thankful for the phone call. Talking to a person when you are happy will also influence how the other person feels. It is hard to keep from sharing a smile and especially a laugh.

A smile helps with good service

The person on the other end of the line can feel your happiness and therefore can become more content and satisfied with any business decisions the two of you have made. Giving good service use to be part of the American business creed but lately it seems to have vanished. Think how a smile and some extra effort could be what makes you stand out as a business that cares about their customers and gives the good service to prove it!

Thank them with a smile

As a customer or potential customer hangs up the phone with you the last words you should share with them is a thank you with a smile on your face. This sends warm and thoughtful vibes to them. If you had the exact same service for the exact same price as your competitor and the customer had to make a choice on who they where going to use for the service who do you think they are going to chose? It’s going to be the person who cares the most about them and makes them feel special. Always close your conversations with a smile. It’s as if you are holding out your arm and shaking their hand.

I thought I’d add a little video about putting on a happy face. Enjoy!

  1. It’s been an old rule of thumb- always make sure you are smiling- even if talking on the phone. The listener will pick up on it (because it changes how we talk). If you find that hard- have a mirror on your desk and watch it as you talk.

Good tip about the mirror. Just having a conversation with somebody makes me happy and smile. Its hard for me to interact and not enjoy the conversation.

It’s strange isn’t it? Even though the person on the other end can’t see you, they feel the smile. It’s the same when you write too. Smiling changes the whole tone – have you tried writing a rant with a smile on your face? Impossible!

    Hi Shawn,

It’s funny how smiling while you write makes you write differently … Spend a few minutes reading a few jokes, then get down to do some writing :)

I agree with you that a smile is like a bright lightbulb: lights up the whole room and makes everything just a bit brighter.

    Have a great weekend.

I’m loving this idea of smiling while you write. It’s a new concept for me. I always knew about the smile while on the phone. Love it!
